The Rollercoaster of Starting My Art Business: The Highs, Lows, and Lessons of Perseverance

Starting an art business is like riding a thrilling rollercoaster. There are exhilarating highs of creativity, gut-wrenching lows of self-doubt, and daily efforts to turn dreams into reality. As an artist, I never anticipated how wild this journey would be. But through perseverance, I've found out what it truly means to follow my passion.

Here’s an honest look at my experiences, featuring valuable lessons that I've learned along the way.

Igniting the Passion

Igniting the Passion

Having been raised by two artist parents who instilled in me a deep understanding of painting and a respect for the craft, I was fortunate to learn from my father, an art restorationist. While I have always had a passion for this profession, I recently made the bold decision to pursue it as a full-time career. Overcoming my fears, I took the leap, and I am grateful that I did.

Every journey begins with a moment of inspiration.

But I quickly learned that diving in isn't as simple as it seems.

Facing the Reality

Starting a business involves a series of essential steps and considerations:

  • Filing for a business license

  • Obtaining copyright approvals

  • Handling tax documents

  • Setting up and maintaining a website

It's crucial to take the time to gather all necessary information and ensure everything is done correctly. Having guidance from a knowledgeable individual can be invaluable in navigating the complexities of starting a business.

The First High: Launch Day

After countless late nights, I finally launched my website and social media accounts. Seeing my art online for the first time was exhilarating! Positive feedback flooded in almost immediately, and each like and comment served as a boost of motivation.

However, the challenge was to maintain that momentum after the initial excitement wore off.

The Sweet Taste of Success

As I persevered, I found success in unexpected places. I managed to secure several small commissions, which not only helped cover expenses but also validated my work. Each success restored my confidence.

Success Story on X Platform

I joined X and found that I was able to create a rather large following and a big support network where most of my work was commissioned from. The X platform has really helped catapult my business into the online market.

Establishing Connections and Building Relationships

The X platform has been instrumental in fostering relationships and networking effectively. By engaging with key accounts on the platform, I have successfully promoted my business and found the recipe for success. Persistence and networking have played a crucial role in this journey.

Embracing the Learning Experience

Launching an art business includes mastering creative and business skills. Navigating social media marketing, pricing strategies, and understanding my target audience felt like juggling multiple balls in the air.

I dedicated time to research and learn what successful artists did behind the scenes. While it was overwhelming at times, each mistake became a teaching moment, highlighting what true perseverance looks like.

Pro Tip: Set aside a few hours each week to learn something new about marketing. Websites like Skillshare or Coursera offer affordable courses that can enhance your skills significantly.

The Low Points

As with any rollercoaster ride, I faced low points too. Creative blocks left me uninspired, and moments of burnout crept in more than once.

I found support from:

  • My loved ones who always push me to be the best I can be

  • My community on the X platform

It is not easy starting and maintaining an art business but having a support network who stands behind you is the key to success.

Amidst these circumstances, the support from the community was crucial. I participated in virtual artist communities to discuss my struggles. This connection served as a reminder that many others were facing similar paths, and the collective experience revitalized my passion.

Balancing Life and Business

As my art business expanded, finding a work-life balance became crucial. Late nights in the studio and constant social media updates began affecting my mental health.

I organized my schedule to prioritize creativity, connection, and self-care. I learned that perseverance is not only about hard work; it's also about maintaining sustainability in the long run.

The Ongoing Journey

Starting an art business continues to be a rollercoaster ride. I navigate various ups and downs but have learned to embrace every moment, whether uplifting or challenging. Each day brings joy through creation and connection.

Reflecting on my journey, it’s clear that it has not been a straight path. Instead, it is an experience woven with joy, sorrow, and resilience.

The Takeaway: Keep Riding the Rollercoaster

If there’s one key insight from my experience starting an art business, it’s the value of perseverance. While the road can be tough, each twist and turn offers lessons that lead to personal growth.

To my fellow artists: Embrace every part of this ride. The challenges you face can lead to phenomenal growth. Share your journey, support each other, and never lose sight of your passion. The joyous highs make every dip worthwhile!
